November newsletter

Dear Parents,

Thank you for your support of the Boosterthon. We have met one of our goals. Our class is looking forward to the Fun Run on Thursday. Please come out and cheer us on if you can. Our Fun Run time is scheduled for 9:30 to 10:15. Go Chargers!

We have another new student, Deja Washington. We want to welcome her to our class and to SSC. We are so glad to have her. She helps us to now have 18 students- 9 girls and 9 boys!

I want to make sure you saw the letter I sent home about the H1N1 shots not being available right now. If you had given permission for your child to receive the vaccination I will let you know asap when the vaccinations become available.

Scholastic book orders will not be sent home this month. Instead of ordering with me this month I would like you to support Mrs. Brown, our librarian, who is having a Book Fair this month. Information will be coming home soon about the Crane Book Fair.

Due to scheduling difficulties with the Botanical Gardens we will have to postpone this field trip. We are looking at rescheduling this trip in the Spring.

We had so much fun last Friday, before Halloween. Our Fun Friday included a mystery guest who came disguised as a witch and read a book to us. Thanks, Mrs. Gunnells! The class loved it as well as the treats. We also enjoyed the dirt cups that Mrs. Couch made for us! It was a really fun day!

Please keep Elizabeth Knerr and her family in your thoughts and prayers. Her cousin, Emily, who is 7 years old, has recently been diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer. Please go to Caringbridge.org and type in Emilyknerr (all one word) to see this precious girl. I know that Elizabeth and her mom, Kelly, would love for you to read and follow her progress. The children and I are going to begin sending little words of encouragement to lift her spirits and we will make her cards this week. I will send you more information soon about other ways that we can help Emily and her family.

What we are learning this week:

Math- Data collection projects. Students have collected, organized, and analyzed data based on a survey question they chose. They will organize their data in a graph, interpret the results, and present it to the class.

Reading- Inferring about our characters. We are reading Alexander, Who's Not Going to Move by Judith Viorst

Science- Skeletal and Muscular systems of the body. The study guide will come home today for our quiz on Friday.

Writing - Personal Narratives, noticing writer's craft, and the study of adjectives

Spelling- our lists include words that have consonant blends br, dr

Read Aloud - Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing

Thank you,

October News

Dear Families,

We had a great time at the Alabama Theater today seeing the Alabama Symphony perform. We enjoyed "Symphony in Space" and the tribute to the 40th anniversary of the first landing on the moon. Be sure to ask your child which musical piece and which instrument was their favorite.

A new student joined our class on Tuesday. We are very excited to welcome Bayley Thornton to SSC and to our classroom. Sadly, however, we will be saying goodbye to our friend, Cameron Ferguson, this Friday. We will miss you, Cameron, and wish you the best at your new school!

Please join us tomorrow night (Thursday) for Spirit Night at Chick-Fil-A in the Galleria! Hopefully, we can have the highest attendance and win an ice cream party. Hope to see you there!

The Book Fair in our library is tomorrow and Friday only. If your child would like to order please send the Book Order form and money during these two days. Our Scholastic Book orders should be mailed to school by Friday or Monday.

Thanks for conferencing with me last week and Monday. I enjoyed having the opportunity to talk with you about your child.

Report cards and graded papers were sent home today. Please sign and send these back tomorrow.

Thank you,

Mrs. Chapman
